An Iterative Inversion of the Radiative Transfer Equation for Temperature Profiles.

Abstract

An iterative technique is developed for determining atmospheric temperature profiles from measurements of the earth's outgoing radiance. The solution is nonlinear, thus allowing for meaningful physical and mathematical results and avoiding computational difficulties which often arise from linear approaches. An algorithm has been developed to increase the rate of convergence. When this algorithm is used, convergence is usually obtained in three iterations. (Author)
