An Empirical Study of the Chi Square Approximation to the Distributions of the Chi Square and Log Likelihood-Ratio Criteria of Goodness of Fit in Small Samples (with Tables).

Abstract

The objectives of the study are the following: To provide new information concerning the chi square approximation to the discrete sampling distributions of the Pearson chi squared and log likelihood-ratio criteria of goodness of fit; to assess the adequacy of both tests and their exact counterparts with respect to Type I errors under two null hypotheses for moderate sample sizes n = or < 15 and categories k = or < 15; to compare the powers of the classical tests for two null and two alternative hypotheses; and, to investigate the problem of small expected category frequencies and pooling.
