Investigation of Possible Synergistic Effects of Neutrons and Photons in Selected Dosimetric Materials,

Abstract

An experiment was conducted to investigate the possible existence of a synergistic response in several different dosimetric materials when they are exposed to fast neutrons and gamma rays. Gamma ray exposure data obtained on various nuclear weapon tests indicated the possibility exists that these materials did not respond in an additive manner when exposed to a radiation environment containing both neutrons and photons (gamma rays). The experimental procedure consisted of exposing the dosimeters individually to neutron and gamma rays as well as to a combined neutron and gamma ray environment. The investigation revealed that three of four types of gamma ray exposure dosimeters routinely employed do not respond in a strictly additive manner when exposed to mixed radiation environments. Based on the accepted definition of the word synergism, only LiF thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD) exhibited a synergistic effect. That is the combined neutron and gamma ray response was greater than the sum of the individual responses for this particular dosimeter. (Modified author abstract)
