Fabrication of Hard Glass Plates.

Abstract

This report describes the fabrication of hard glass for use in ballistic application. The work consisted of establishing optimum composition and process conditions for several different glasses. Properties such as Knoop hardness, density, flexural strength, Young's modulus, visible transmission and percent haze were determined. A beryllia containing glass having an apparent hardness of approximately 900 Knoop (density = 2.56 gram/cc) was selected for ballistic testing and thirty-two 4-inch diameter discs were fabricated for this purpose.
