Investigation of a Parametric Resonance Magnetometer Using Optically Pumped Helium 4.

Abstract

The report describes the investigation of parametric resonances and the use of resulting resonances for measuring magnetic fields. This work includes investigation of the 2 triplet S(1) level of helium 4 by parametric resonances and establishes the feasibility of constructing a vector magnetometer using the parametric resonance n = 1. A device of this type was demonstrated to have a peak-to-peak noise level of 1.0 x 10 to the minus 7th power G in a 5.0 Hz noise bandwidth when used to monitor a component of the geomagnetic field.
