Predicting Human Performance VI: The Accuracy of Identifying Simple Visual Targets.
Abstract
A quantitative analysis of the literature concerned with the accuracy of identifying visually presented alphanumeric symbols and familiar geometric shapes indicated that performance was primarily determined by exposure time and by maximum information input rate. These findings were interpreted in terms of the efficiency of an encoding mechanism which scans the stimulus input. Other factors of major importance were the relative predictability of target positions and the limitations imposed by short-term memory.
