Electromagnetic Surveying and Map Variation in Rock Strength.

Abstract

Rock strength depends on porosity, among other factors. Inasmuch as electrical resistivity also depends on the amount of water-filled pore volume in a rock, one would expect rock strength and resistivity to correlate with each other to the extent that porosity is the important parameter in controlling variations in each of these properties. In a laboratory study, the strength characteristics and other properties of a suite of basalt samples were altered progressively by shocking them with higher and higher temperatures. Within this limited suite of samples, a reasonable correlation between strength and resistivity was found to be present. (Modified author abstract)
