Exploratory Development on Elastomeric Material.

Abstract

Nine diaphragms plus four laboratory flats are molded from a new elastomeric compound, designated AF-E-332 into a configuration identical to that of a propellant expulsion diaphragm used in a 22-inch diameter hydrazine tank employed on the LMSCI DEVELOPED Satellite Control Section. The results of physical properties tests conducted on specimens obtained from the diaphragms and from the laboratory flats are described. Results from the development tests conducted on three of the diaphragms when tested in a mockup of the actual flight tank are presented. Also included are the data on chemical compatibility of the new material after exposing three of the diaphragms to hydrazine propellant for a period of 50 days. Two of the diaphragms are installed in flight-type tanks and subjected to qualification tests equivalent to those originally utilized to qualify the tanks for the Satellite Control Section. Results of the qualification tests are summarized. (Author-PL)
