X-Ray Emission from Solar Flares and Active Regions.

Abstract

The research conducted under this contract is summarized. Work in the following general areas is described: (1) Calculations of the X-ray emission from a hot plasma; (2) effect on the X-ray spectrum of departure from steady-state ionization conditions during solar flares; (3) cooling mechanisms operating in solar flare plasma; (4) heating of active regions by magnetic energy dissipation; (5) the nature of plasma arcs in solar active regions; and, (6) a model for magnetic field annihilation.
