Tandem Towing Tests of the MHU-12/M Trailer.

Abstract

Two MHU-12/M Trailers in tandem behind a 1-1/2-ton truck were subjected to braking and road tests on roads of various surface conditions at speeds to 20 miles per hour. Three load conditions of the trailers were used in the tests: unloaded, a low center-of-gravity load at near rated capacity, and a high center-of-gravity load at near rated capacity. Speeds above 15 miles per hour were judged hazardous and are not recommended. Towing of a loaded trailer in tandem behind an unloaded trailer proved to be extremely unstable and resulted in breaking the tow bar of the aft trailer during a panic stop. No extremely hazardous behavior was noted towing two loaded trailers in tandem at speeds to 15 miles per hour. (Author)
