Rigorous Diffraction Theory.
Abstract
A fundamental problem in radar is the determination of how an obstacle perturbs a propagating electromagnetic wave. Both in detection and discrimination of targets of various configuration and constitutive material as well as determining how a vehicle perturbs a signal transmitted from its own antenna, the essential problem is one of predicting the effect on an incident field of an object of any material and shape in any environment. Mathematically, this involves solutions of the wave equation, the Helmholtz equation, and Maxwell's equations with boundary or transition conditions imposed on arbitrarily shaped surfaces. The report describes the results of research on a number of problems in this general area. (Modified author abstract)
