An Analog Recording and Computerized Analysis System for Behavioral Data.

Abstract

A system for recording and analyzing behavioral data is described. An encoder, decoder, and digital computer interface are the essential components. Information in the form of switch closures is received from behavioral control equipment, and is converted by the encoder into two coded, amplitude modulated data channels. These data channels may be recorded on any suitable audio or instrumentation magnetic tape recorder. At a later time, the magnetic tapes may be played back at higher speed (x 30) and decoded, providing a great reduction in the time necessary to analyze the data. The decoder communicates through an interface with the AFRRI data acquisition system (DAS), a small digital computer programmed to extract response latency, type of response, and trial start time for the behavioral data as it is played back. The DAS provides hard magnetic tape copies of individual trial data. Supplementary programs can plot and statistically evaluate the data. (Author)
