On the Possibility of the Terrestrial Magnetic Field Disappearing in an Inversion Process (K Vozmozhnosti Ischeznoveniya Magnitnogo Polya Zemli v Protsesse Inversii),

Abstract

Various hypotheses (chiefly Frenkel's and Elsasser's 'earth dynamo' and 'period of rest' theories) dealing with inversion phenomena, i.e., change of sign in the terrestrial magnetic field are examined and evaluated mathematically. Calculations, consisting in the application of certain principles and consequences of the theory of characteristic surfaces to a system of wave equations, are developed that show the basic incompatibility of the two following principles, viz., (1) there is a 'period of rest' in the inversion process, and (2) the magnetic field remains analogous to the dipole field during the inversion period.
