Theoretical Study of the Effective Polarizability of Adsorbed Molecules on Metal Surfaces.

Abstract

The report concerns the effect of the presence of the surface on the polarizability of adsorbed molecules on metal surfaces. It is pointed out that one must invoke the idea of the polarizability of the substrate in order to agree with the experiment. An interaction, leading to an induced dipole moment of adsorbed molecules which consequently reduces the work function, is described. (Author)
