Synthesis of Transparent Rubber-Modified Polymers.

Abstract

A styrene/methyl methacrylate copolymer was developed to match the refractive index of polybutadiene at room temperature (23/77 weight % styrene/methyl methacrylate). Methods were developed to enable production of 300, 2000 and 5000 A polybutadiene rubber latex particles. A series of rubber modified transparent polymers were successfully produced and examined for ballistic resistance and optical clarity. Of the variables studied, the optimum properties were developed by a 300 A rubber particle size with a high degree of adhesion and a high degree of dispersion. The polymer containing 15% rubber was superior. (Modified author abstract)
