Simulation of Transient Heat Transfer to Stationary Projectiles with Prescribed Initial and Boundary Conditions using Models of Reduced Size.

Abstract

The methodology is developed for simulating transient heat transfer to a projectile placed in a heated gun barrel, by using models of reduced size. The model design and operating conditions are selected on the basis of matching 18 out of 19 independent, non-dimensional parameters. The 19 parameters are determined from a dimensional analysis of the identified fundamental quantities that are necessary to describe the projectile-gas-gun barrel system. In particular an example 155mm projectile with prescribed initial and boundary conditions is treated and the materials, dimensions and operating conditions for a 1/4 size model of the example projectile are specified.
