An Investigation of Off-Road Vehicle Power Train Diagnostics Utilizing High Frequency Vibration Analysis.

Abstract

The report covers a short three-month program to investigate the feasibility of using high-frequency vibration analysis to diagnose power train condition in off-highway vehicles. The program was conducted on Caterpillar D8H crawler-type tractors. It was found that the use of vibration generated during shift transients to identify spectral regions of interest and to serve as a guide in establishing limits for steady-state vibration analysis appears to be a valid method for diagnosing power train component degradation. Examples of data characteristics considered normal and abnormal for the three major power train components are included in the report. In this respect the program was very fortunate because data from different tractors were recorded and analyzed that varied in age from a new tractor to one that had been used for over 12,000 hours.
