Comparative Evaluation of Trace Gas Technology. Volume II. Analysis and Evaluation of Instrumental Methods.

Abstract

The collected reports represent a survey undertaken to determine which instrumental methods are potential candidates for detection of trace quantities of TNT or DNT emitted from military land mines. The first group consists of analyses of the theory of operation of existing instrumental methods which have, or could be expected to achieve in the near future, the sensitivity required to detect trace gas quantities of TNT or DNT. From this analysis the operating parameters influencing sensitivity, selectivity and response time are identified. Recommendations for design changes and future development are given. The next group are analyses on signal processing considerations and on membrane separators, which are used in several existing instruments. The third group discuss evaluations of existing instruments in order to determine their sensitivity and utility. The factors which can influence the transport of vapors emitted from mines through the soil cover to the soil-air interface where they are to be detected are discussed.
