An Introduction to Search Theory

Abstract

The paper intends to be an introduction to search theory, and it is written primarily to assist staff officers in their duties. For those who are in charge of planning and deciding about search, it is generally felt that it is necessary to know what is behind the standard procedures found in tactical publications. However, they are seldom familiar with the advanced mathematics required to read the sophisticated papers on the subject. This text is an attempt to conciliate those officers needs, with the reasonable amount of precision, which is required for planning, analyzing and evaluating search procedures.
