Gross Voided Flame Arresters for Fuel Tank Explosion Protection

Abstract

New materials are investigated for use as flame arresters within gross voided aircraft fuel tankages with the aim of reducing present weight penalties. Ignition source was found significant and includes a spark, incidiary igniter, and .50 caliber API GUNFIRE. From an initial selection of forty materials, five were ultimately utilized for full-scale tests within simulated fuselage and wing tankages in various void configurations. It was concluded that fuel tank voiding up to and exceeding 80% is attainable within certain tankage configurations and with specific arrester materials.
