Computer Simulations and Processing of Degraded Images.
Abstract
The report presents the results of a computer simulation study to test the usefulness of the application of post detection image processing techniques to images degraded by atmospheric turbulence. The major conditions used as a basis for the study were: sun-illuminated object in low earth orbit, point spread function known by use of a reference point source, isoplanatic condition satisfied, quantum limited photodetector, and processing of the recorded degraded image by means of a modified least squares filter. In addition the effects of reduced image signal-to-noise ratio, spectral mismatch between the object and reference point source, defocus of the point spread function, and object orientation were considered. The results of the study are given in photographs which show the appearance of the computer degraded and processed images as a function of the various parameters involved in the study. (Author)
