Poisonous and Dangerous Fishes (Yadovitye i Opasnye Ryby),

Abstract

Some fishes of the southwestern Atlantic are considered dangerous to man. These fishes belong to two groups: (a) fishes with poison-producing glands or organs, and (b) fishes that acquire poisonous properties due to the action of saprophytic bacteria which enter them. The moray eel family (Muraenidae) is one of the few fishes with poisonous bites. Among the actively poisonous the ones possessing puncturing poisonous apparatus are more common. Numerous representatives of these are given. (Modified author abstract)
