The Applicability of Light Scattering Spectroscopy to the Measurement of the Viscoelastic Parameters of Lubricants.
Abstract
Various techniques for the measurement of the viscoelastic properties of lubricants are described. These include a novel method using light scattering and photon correlation spectroscopy. This combination of techniques has been applied to a detailed viscoelastic study of the lubricant 5P4E (a polyphenyl ether manufactured by Monsanto Chemical Corp.). The results reported include; Sound velocity measurements obtained by both light scattering and ultrasonics; measurements of the structural relaxation function and the average structural relaxation times using digital correlation spectroscopy; and static shear viscosity. These measurements have all been made as a function of pressure. The results demonstrate that the light scattering techniques can extend the range of viscosity measurements by at least four orders of magnitude. (Modified author abstract)
