Wind Prediction for Gulf of Tonkin. CVA Operations during the Southwest Monsoon.
Abstract
A diurnal variability of the surface wind in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Southwest Monsoon season is reviewed to establish techniques for forecasting periods of light wind which hamper carrier launch and recovery operations. Assuming persistence or predictability of the 850-mb. flow, the diurnal variation of the surface wind speed can be determined by adding an empirical sea-breeze component to the basic surface flow. Two dominant flow patterns are compared with respect to the diurnal and spatial variability of the surface winds. Marginally light wind for flight operations are shown to prevail subsequent to a morning surface flow from the southwest; while with a morning southeasterly surface flow, generally adequate winds persist throughout the afternoon.
