Studies on Passive Q-Switch Materials for Lasers.

Abstract

The behavior of passive Q-switch (PQS) materials and the mechanisms responsible for fatigue were investigated for the purpose of achieving improved passive Q-switch materials for lasers. The research program emphasized basic chemical materials aspects of PQS dye solutions and their improvements. The investigation combined fundamental and applied research related to the use of materials as reliable and efficient passive Q-switches for ruby lasers. The work included the synthesis of dyes and studies of the photochemical fatigue processes as well as the optical saturation processes. Emphasis was placed on the improvement of PQS materials that can also act as mode-locking components. For this reason most of the work was done on polymethine-type of dye structures.
