Mercury Vapor Laser.

Abstract

The report describes work on a program to develop a high power laser utilizing the band emission of high density mercury excited by electrons. The spectroscopy and kinetics of excited mercury is discussed. The kinetics of energy exchange between low energy electrons and mercury is treated in detail, as is the problem of energy deposition for high voltage electrons penetrating a foil and the mercury gas. The authors describe the performance of the high voltage, cold cathode electron gun, developed as a laser driver during this contract. (Author)
