Portable Seismic Monitor User's Guide.

Abstract

Linear and angular motion of 'background seismic' and larger magnitude will affect the test results of modern inertial instruments. Unless the test specimen is isolated from such motion, or unless the test base motion is accurately measured and applied as data correction, the test results will be invalidated. A Portable seismic Monitor (PSM) has been developed to measure these kinematic motions associated with an inertial instrument test laboratory. This report describes the basic theory of motion measurement with the geophone sensor, an electromagnetic indictance type seismometer. The associated electronics are described in detail; and schematics and parts layout are provided. The PSM operator is provided with procedures for setup, operation, and calculations pertinent to measurement of instrument test-base motion. (Modified author abstract)
