Photochemistry of Perfluorocyclobutanone.

Abstract

Primary photochemical transformations of perfluorocyclobutanone in its first excited state have been investigated at low pressures. The results of fluorescence decay time measurements, fluorescence excitation spectroscopy, direct photolysis at varying wavelengths and triplet benzene photosensitization indicate that (1) intersystem crossing is most important at low excitation energies, (2) internal conversion dominates at high excitation energies, and (3) the photodecomposition mechanisms are similar to those proposed recently for cyclobutanone but differ significantly from that for perfluorocyclobutanone proposed earlier by Phillips.
