Adjoint Variational Principle for the Stability of Beams with Internal and External Damping.

Abstract

An adjoint variational principle for damped cantilever Euler beams has been developed and applied to a determination of critical flutter load via a generalized Ritz procedure. The result is a dimensionless characteristic equation for flutter load which may immediately be solved by a digital computer once the necessary material and geometric properties are specified.
