Evaluation of the Rex Oxygen Analyzer-Controller for Underwater Breathing Apparatus,

Abstract

The oxygen analyzer-controller component of a closed circuit mixed gas underwater breathing apparatus was evaluated. The analyzer is based on the fact that the speed of sound is different for different gases and mixtures of gases. The analyzer-controller (senser) was found to be unsatisfactory in design and workmanship. The use of the speed of sound to analyze and control breathing mixtures in underwater breathing apparatus was found to be feasible; however, the findings were inconclusive due to the poor performance of the apparatus.
