Laboratory Testing of Reentry Plasma Diagnostic Devices,

Abstract

The U.S. Air Force has conducted a number of Trailblazer 2 reentry test flights to gather information concerning the reentry plasma sheath. A number of reentry plasma diagnostic devices have been developed by various groups for these test flights but, heretofore, have not been simultaneously tested under controlled laboratory conditions. The results of such laboratory tests, recently conducted at Colorado State University, are reported herein together with a detailed discussion concerning the theory of operation of the devices.
