How Europeans Feel about Detente.

Abstract

The essay surveys how Europeans fit themselves into their continent and how by and large, thanks to 'detente' they live better than ever. The character of Europeans and their mental attitudes in differentiation to those of Americans is examined, a low point in the Cold War is established, and then the step by step process to detente as it exists today is described. Particularly noteworthy in this process were economic considerations of Europeans as well as Americans, the general attitude of the United States toward detente as well as the very definite burning point which culminated in the promulgation of 'Ostpolitik'.
