Application of the U.S. Strategy of Realistic Deterrence to Europe: A Strategic Doctrine for U.S. Forces.

Abstract

A major issue, today, is whether or not changing the U.S. troop deployment posture in Europe in the 1970's would enhance the security and stability of that region. The paper explores a strategic doctrine for 'Shadowboxing Forces'. The growing pressure for reduction of U.S. armed forces, the increasing political and economic development of Western European unity, and the atmosphere of East-West detente mitigates the adjustment of the U.S. military deployments in Europe and the Mediterranean areas.
