The Implications of Strategic Nuclear Parity: The United States Army and the Conventional Option.
Abstract
In the U.S., a nation which glamorizes modernity and youth, the Army is presumed by many to be inherently out of date, inefficient, and probably unnecessary. The basic question then is what is the importance of the Army to national security in a post-Vietnam world and an era of nuclear parity exists which includes strategic nuclear sufficiency for assured destruction second strikes. A nontechnical approach to game theory is used to establish that intentional initiation of strategic nuclear warfare is unlikely in such an environment. It is established through the analysis of the relationship between various elements of national power that a strong ready US Army, organized and equipped to successfully counter real and potential enemies and defend essential national interests, is important to national security.
