The Strategic Importance of Micronesia.

Abstract

Withdrawal of US forces from Asia has resulted in greater attention being directed to Micronesia as a possible site for the establishment of a forward defensive perimeter in the Pacific. The paper examines the forces and trends occurring in Asia and the Pacific; analyzes the impact of US withdrawal on the future relationships with allies in these areas; and evaluates the impact of US reduced military posture on US national interests. The report concludes that all US forces will be withdrawn from Asia and the Western Pacific by the end of this decade; the only feasible, alternative location for the establishment of a defensive perimeter beyond CONUS lies in Micronesia; and sectional agreements between the US and the trust territory districts will be favorably concluded.
