Effect of Nonuniform Spanwise Gusts on Aircraft Vertical Response.

Abstract

A gust response treatment based on random process techniques is given herein where explicit consideration is given to the randomness of the gusts in the spanwise direction, as well as in the direction of flight. An analysis is made of a rigid airplane with the degree of freedom of vertical motion to establish the basic response equations, and in particular the structural response quantity relating gust severity and acceleration response, and the zero-crossings parameter. Specific results are evaluated for wings of several aspect ratios; a comparison is made with previously established results wherein the gusts were treated as being uniform in the spanwise direction.
