DNA Project 609 Radar: Auroral Backscatter Measurements.
Abstract
In 1972 a 398-MHz phased array antenna system was installed at Homer, Alaska and integrated with the DNA 609 radar system. This report describes the results of the first year of the phased array radar operation in the auroral zone. During the year, the radar site was manned for approximately seven weeks. Over 70 hours of clutter-map digital tape recordings were taken using the phased array radar. All of the data has been surveyed and portions of it analyzed in great detail. During the past year the mathematical reflection mechanism theory was developed extensively. The fluid theory of a two-stream plasma instability was extended to allow for different electron and ion temperatures. Closed-form solutions were developed that show the analytic dependence of all physical quantities of interest and the general physical behavior of instability. In addition to the research studies a number of equipment modifications and additions were made to improve the reliability of the phased-array antenna system and the data-handling capability of the digital data processing system.
