The United States and Thailand in the 1970's: Another Vietnam.

Abstract

With the withdrawal of US military personnel from Vietnam, the US and Thailand must consider anew what their relationship will be in the era of the Nixon Doctrine and Congressional desires not to become involved in another situation like Vietnam. A review of US commitments to Thailand under SEATO, the Thai insurgency problem, economic situation and relations with its neighbors reveals a dissimilarity with Vietnam of the early 1960's. Signs point to a period in the future of Thai attempts toward accomodation with the Peoples Republic of China and a continued but greatly reduced US presence in Thailand. (Author)
