Neuronal Activities on the Regulation of Feeding (Study of the Membrane Characteristics of Chemoreceptive Neurons in the Hypothalamus).

Abstract

A large body of both behavioral and electrophysiological data demonstrates the reciprocal relationship between two hypothalamic areas, ventromedial nucleus (VMH) and lateral area (LH). Neuronal activity from both centers reaches the autonomic nuclei of the midbrain tegmentum and medulla by way of the medial forebrain bundle, the periventricular fiber system, and the dorsal longitudinal fasciculus. It is through these lower centers that the control of feeding behavior is exercised. Both LH and VMH are influenced by nuclei of the limbic and extrapyramidal motor systems, which send efferent facilitatory and inhibitory fibers to both areas. In addition to this, a wide variety of sensory afferent input, regarding oropharyngeal and other external peripheral sensations and, internal stimulation from gastric distension, liver glucoreceptor etc., reaches these hypothalamic areas after being integrated in and relayed through the ascending reticular formation.
