Nonlinear Electrooptic Materials for Covert Lasers.

Abstract

Investigations carried out and the results obtained during a four month program on nonlinear electrooptic material for covert lasers are described. These studies included Czochralski direct-melt single crystal growth of strontium barium niobate and strontium barium lithium niobate. Optical measurements such as degradation studies, dielectric experiments, and electrooptic coefficient investigations were conducted. On the basis of these results, a strontium barium lithium niobate composition was selected to be the optimum state-of-the-art nonlinear electrooptic material for Q-switch applications. Two models were fabricated for use with covert lasers (Ho doped YLF). Both of these models employ a matched pair of strontium barium lithium niobate single crystals. The first model has been designed and fabricated as a direct replacement for lithium niobate in available electronic Q-switch systems, while the second model will yield an improved lower voltage requirement Q-switch assembly.
