APL/JHU Project Report: Computer Technology for Harbor Traffic Systems.

Abstract

The San Francisco Experimental Vessel Traffic System (VTS), is an all-weather harbor traffic management complex which has extensively exploited real time automatic processing technology. Eleven computers and two radar signal processors combine to automatically detect and track bay shipping, display animated maps with vessel locations and velocity indicators, detect critical situations, respond to operator analysis requests entered via interactive graphics terminals, and maintain a ship information file. A description of these capabilities is supplemented with presentations of concepts suitable for consideration in future development efforts. (Modified author abstract)
