Analytical Photogrammetric Positioning System (APPS) to Support the Field Army,

Abstract

A field deployable photogrammetric system has been developed by the U.S. Army Engineer Topographic Laboratories (USAETL) to rapidly provide horizontal and vertical (X, Y, and Z) positional data for the location of various types of targets and weapons for the Field Army. The system was developed in a highly accelerated development program, subjected to Military Potential Tests, type classified Standard B, and is being developed for troop use. The system uses a previously prepared data base (consisting of cartographic photographs and associated numerical data) plus mensuration and computation equipment which can be set up and operated on top of a standard size desk or table. The system is designed for operation by relatively unskilled Army personnel and is also being used by the Air Force, Navy, and Defense Mapping Agency in a variety of tactical and nontactical missions. USAETL is continuing development of this system to enable the use of various types of data bases and to improve hardware components. (Author)
