35 GHz Stratospheric Propagation.

Abstract

A recent translation of a Russian paper purports to have established a new long range communication link at 30-45 GHz using reflections from a stratospheric layer. Because of certain questionable aspects of the translation, a study has been undertaken to explore what mechanisms might exist for propagation via the stratosphere at gigahertz frequencies. It is concluded that some mechanisms are possible but none are very probable. The most likely means might be one making use of the whispering gallery effect. (Author)
