Studies on the Antigenic Composition of 'Coxiella burnetii'.

Abstract

The report deals with the phase variation of Coxiella burneti and includes studies of the chemical composition of the two phase types. In addition immunological studies were carried out which examined the humoral and cellular response in vaccinated guinea pigs. A human population with past history of C. burneti infection was also studied immunologically, to determine the longevity of the immune response in Q fever infection. The chemical composition studies were performed in cell envelope preparations of Phase I and Phase II C. burneti. Cell envelopes obtained from Phase I organisms characteristically showed a higher protein and carbohydrate content than the Phase II preparations. Significantly the carbohydrates glucoronic acid, glucose and galactose were present in Phase I preparation whereas only glucose and galactose were present in Phase II. (Modified author abstract)
