The Current Status of Computer-Aided Retrospective Searching in DSIS.

Abstract

The DSIS experimental retrospective search system employs a computer-based index which can be searched by non-programmer-personnel terminals located remotely from the computer. The results of the search are displayed on the terminal and consist of document titles and cross reference data. The cross reference data are used to search a microfilm containing the full bibliographic citation associated with the document. The citation in most instances contains an abstract of the document. The use of microfilm allows citations associated with classified material to be made available to the end user even though the index system employs a public computer utility and normal public communication facilities (voice-grade telephone). The development of the experimental system and a previous simulation phase are discussed. (Author)
