Pi - Bonding in Silicon Compounds.

Abstract

The reaction of chloromethyldimethylsilane with lithium t-butoxide in pyridine has been investigated in detail. The only observable product is t-butoxy-trimethylsilane, and this arises in a bimolecular reaction between base and silane. In an attempt to discriminate between a base-promoted elimination reaction and an alternative route involving rate-determining nucleophilic attack at silicon, the authors have carried out a series of experiments. The deuterium kinetic isotope effect and an observed pseudo-first order rate constant was observed. The mechanism of reaction is discussed. (Modified author abstract)
