A Survey of Strategic Commerce and Industry along the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and the Gulf of Mexico.

Abstract

A description is given of the Mississippi River with special attention to the reach between Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the Gulf of Mexico and its capacity to accommodate ocean-going vessels. Also, the importance of the river's connection to the inland waterway system and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway is demonstrated. A survey was made of the major industries along the river between Baton Rouge and the Gulf of Mexico and their products. Emphasis is given to the expanding petrochemical industry in view of the energy crisis. Trends in industrial development are explored. The strategic value of the river in terms of water for industrial and navigation purposes is established. (Modified author abstract)
