Recruitment and Retention of Medical Officers for Army National Guard and Reserve Forces.

Abstract

The purpose of the essay is to examine the problems related to medical officer procurement and retention in Army National Guard units and Reserve Forces generally. Related problems of medical officer procurement and retention in all of the branches of service in the Department of Defense, the US Public Health Service, and the Veterans Administration are discussed. Because of the availability of positions in local Army National Guard units throughout the nation, many of the problems related to government medical service are present for easy display to the public and to local commanders. Competition between services has become a problem requiring resolution in the near future. Suggestions from different localities are described after helpful leadership has been given by the Army Surgeon, National Guard Bureau in this important task. (Modified author abstract)
