Deterrence in Space: Who Needs It.
Abstract
The issue discussed is whether the US should increase its research and development of defenses against earth orbiting vehicles during the next ten years. The following pertinent areas are explored: parameters of military power in space, known potential threats, feasible defenses, limitations on defenses, limitations on defense, and application of defenses against threats. The relatively advanced state of Soviet near space technology and the long standing Soviet interest in the military implications of space indicate that a space-borne threat to the US exists and is likely to expand during the next decade. The stretegic implications of failing to defend against a space-borne threat are discussed. (Modified author abstract)
