Advancement of Closed Circuit TV Gun Tube Inspection.

Abstract

As a result of a prior MTT project the visual inspection of gun tubes has been advanced with the use of a monochrome CCTV system. The CCTV system reduces inspection time, eliminates undue eye fatigue and provides a much higher magnification with excellent resolution. The application of the monochrome CCTV system with a vidicon tube sensitive to ultra-violet light for use in the magnetic particle inspection of gun tubes is not as effective as the monochrome CCTV system used with visible light. The application of video tape recorders (VTR) in the inspection of the bore surfaces of gun tubes will expand the capabilities of the present CCTV system. The application of color CCTV may provide for the transition of color representation where it is necessary for complete understanding. Magnetic particle inspection of the bore surfaces in a gun tube can be accomplished more effectively with an optical borescope than with a CCTV system at the present time. (Author)
